REVIEWS FOR OPERA NORTH’S PRODUCTION OF HANDEL’S GIULIO CESARE
Leeds Grand Theatre January 2012
**** The Guardian, ”Kathryn Rudge's Sesto...suggests that she has everything required of an exciting young mezzo: tone, technique and absolute conviction in a pair of trousers. (Pictured: Ann Taylor as Cornelia and Kathryn in the role of Sesto. Credit:Tristram Kenton) Opera North’s exciting new production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare directed by Tim Albery and Conducted by Robert Howarth has received four star reviews following the opening night on Saturday 14th January 2012 in the Grand Theatre, Leeds. |
![]() |
Kathryn makes her debut with Opera North in the role of Sesto and has continued to impress the critics with her performance:-
Opera Britannia “The promising young mezzo Kathryn Rudge made a fine Sesto and displayed a beautifully plush timbre and an interesting variety of tonal colours and shading. Her “Cara speme” was sung with great finesse and was one of the musical highlights of the evening…”
***The Times The singers…put across these wonderful numbers with admirable musicality and often heartbreaking poignancy. Indeed several with live long in my memory ….the lamenting duet of Ann Taylor’s widowed Cornelia and Kathryn Rudge as her son Sesto.
****Bachtrack “The standout performances of the night, however, were given by Kathryn Rudge as the murdered Pompeo’s grieving son Sesto and Sarah Tynan as Cleopatra. Rudge sang her arias and duets with great technical skill and passion. She has a rich, creamy mezzo voice perfectly suited to the trouser roles she has received acclaim for.
***Yorkshire Post Of the eight principal characters, the company debut of Kathryn Rudge as Sesto really captured the attention. Recently a student at the Royal Northern College of Music, she is a mezzo of outstanding potential.
The production runs from now until March 2012 in Leeds, Nottingham, Salford Quays, Newcastle and Dublin. For further information see Forthcoming Events

NATIONAL NEWSPAPER THE TIMES: CLASSICAL MUSIC NEW FACE 2012
Saturday 31st December 2011 - The Times Newspaper
Kathryn has been listed by national newspaper The Times as the new face in Classical Music to look out for in 2012.
The Times critics choose their 'rising stars of 2012' across the genres of books, pop, tv, comedy, dance, film, visual art, and theatre. Kathryn has been listed as the New face of Classical Music.
The Times’ Chief Music Critic, Richard Morrison, writes;
“Pop singers can rise in a flash; the operatic route to the top is usually far slower. But Rudge seems to have a magic short-cut. Only 25 and fresh out of Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music, the pint-sized blonde mezzo soprano walked straight into a big Mozart role at English National Opera: Cherubino, the lovestruck adolescent boy in Fiona Shaw’s frenetic staging of The Marriage of Figaro... ...Now, scarcely pausing for breath, Rudge is up in Leeds rehearsing for Opera North’s new staging of Handel’s Julius Cesare in which she plays another bloke, Sesto... In fact, none of this is as unexpected as outsiders may think. At the Royal Northern Rudge caught the eye and ear as a feisty Carmen. Then last spring she won the Joaninha Trust award, an annual contest for which each conservatoire in Britain sleects one outstanding singing student to compete... Nevertheless, the speed of Rudge’s rise is exceptional.” http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/ Photo © Bethany Clarke |

OPERA NOW MAGAZINE: DEBUTANTE OF THE MONTH
August/September
2.9.11
The international magazine Opera Now features Kathryn as their Debutante of the month in their August/Septembert 2011 issue. The magazine celebrates extraordinary young artists-in-the making and the dynamic
companies, large and small, that nurture them.
The feature page article focuses on Kathryn’s transition from College to her first major role which will take place at English National Opera this October/November...
“Though already tipped as one of the most promising young singers of her generation (Opera Now recently called her ‘a singer that stirs the heart’), it’s rare to be offered such a big opportunity so soon at the outset of a career. So we asked Kathryn if she was feeling nervous about it.”
“I feel mainly really excited. Though I recognise it’s a huge challenge”. Appreciating the RNCM’s emphasis on performing Kathryn says “There’s no better way to learn that to be on stage doing it”.

"With her niece Erika by her side, Vanessa has been living the life of a recluse for 20 years, waiting for her lover Anatol to return to her. When Anatol’s son arrives in his place, it is Erika who is initially seduced by the younger man, but a cruel twist leads history to repeat itself...Set on a large, isolated country estate during a seemingly perpetual winter, Gian Carlo Menotti’s libretto has overtones of Ibsen, the psychodrama playing out against music that is at once elegant yet fraught with tension.Barber’s rarely performed score is a masterpiece of pent-up romanticism, sweepingly lyrical and with moments of incredible beauty – a 20th century American opera of the highest order."
